What I A HAL
(1) (Hardware Abstraction Layer) The translation layer in Windows NT that resides between the kernel and I/O system and the hardware itself. Its purpose is to be able to port NT to another platform by designing a new HAL layer for it. In practice, parts of the kernel may have to be optimized.
(2) (Heuristic/ALgorithmic) The computer in the film "2001," which takes over command of the spaceship. Each of the letters in H-A-L coincidentally precede the letters I-B-M.
