What Is A "Low Level Format"
Many manufacturers have the proper low-level formatter for their own drives at the ftp site. SCSI low-level foramtters usually come with the package, and it's usually built into the SCSI host card. Most low-level formatter included in BIOS can be used with MFM, RLL, and IDE drives that's less than 504MB (or 528MB, depending on your math).
A low level format is NOT the same at "format c:"!! You need special software to do a low level format which is done at the factory. Unless you have known disk errors, bad sectors, or fatal aerrors, you don't need to do one. A regular format will solve most file problems. Some utilities are available that low-level format.
The order of preparation is:
Low-level format
Fdisk (partitioning into sectors, this is what most people with large HD's re-do to get more space)
Regular format
New Hard Drives rarely need Low Level Formatting
