Virus Definition Files Using The Intelligent Updater - How To Update

Situation

This document describes how to download and use the Intelligent Updater to update the virus definitions for your Norton or Symantec antivirus program.

• Windows

• There are three methods to download virus definitions using the Intelligent Updater. Go to the method that applies to your situation.

• If you can connect to the Internet and you want to download the latest virus definitions for your computer only, then go to the section "Method 1: I can connect to the Internet".

• If you cannot connect to the Internet or you want to update another computer that does not have Internet access, then go to the section "Method 2: I cannot connect to the Internet"

• If you are a network administrator and want to update all computers on the network, then go to the section "I am a network administrator"

Method 1: I can connect to the Internet

This is the best choice for all individual Norton and Symantec antivirus users who can download files through the Internet either directly or through their corporate network.

1. To download the Intelligent Updater and update the virus definitions

2. Go to the Symantec Virus Definitions Download Page

3. Select the appropriate language and product.

• If you have the retail version of Norton AntiVirus™, then click "Norton AntiVirus for Windows 9x/NT/ME/2000/XP," and then click the "Download Updates" button.

• If you have one of the Enterprise Symantec antivirus programs, then click your program and then click the "Download Updates" button.

4. To start the download, click the first file in the list under "Filename." The file will start with the year and look similar to the following:

20040205-005-i32.exe

5. Click Save.

6. At the next dialog box, save the file to the Desktop and click Save.

7. After the file is downloaded, close Internet Explorer, and any other running software programs.

8. Double-click the file that was saved to the desktop. The virus definitions will be updated.

Method 2: I cannot connect to the Internet

• Use this choice if the computer does not have Internet access or you would like to update another computer that does not have Internet access. To successfully complete these steps, you will need four blank floppy disks.

To Download And Install The Virus Definitions Using Four Floppy Disks

1. Go to the Symantec Virus Definitions Download Page

2. Select the appropriate language and product.

• If you have the retail version of Norton AntiVirus™, then click "Norton AntiVirus for Windows 9x/NT/ME/2000/XP," and then click the "Download Updates" button.

• If you have one of the Enterprise Symantec antivirus programs, then click your program and then click the "Download Updates" button.

3. At the next Web page, scroll down the screen to the second group of files. You will see four files---one with an .exe extension and three with .zip extensions.

4. Insert a floppy in the A drive.

5. Click the .exe file (the file will look similar in format to 20040205-005-i32-1.exe).

6. Click Save.

7. At the next dialog box, save the file to the A drive, and then click Save.

8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 for the other three .zip files, inserting a new floppy for each file.

To Update The Computer

After you download the files to the four floppy disks, then insert the first floppy disk (the one with the .exe file) into the floppy disk drive of the computer to be updated.

1. Double-click the My Computer icon on your Windows desktop.

2. Double-click the floppy disk drive icon.

3. Double-click the .exe file, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

4. During the installation, insert the other three floppy disks when prompted. The virus definitions will be updated.


Method 3: I Am A Network Administrator

• This is the best choice for those who administer a network and want to update many different versions of Norton or Symantec antivirus programs.

1. Go To The Symantec Virus Definitions Download Page

2. Select the appropriate language and product.

• If you have the retail version of Norton AntiVirus™, then click "Norton AntiVirus for Windows 9x/NT/ME/2000/XP," and then click the "Download Updates" button.

• If you have one of the Enterprise Symantec antivirus programs, then click your program and then click the "Download Updates" button.

3. At the next Web page, scroll down the screen to the third group of files.

4. To start the download, click the first file in the list under "Filename." The file will start with the year and look similar to the following:

20040205-005-x86.exe

5. Click Save.

6. At the next dialog box, save the file to the Desktop and click Save.

7. After the file is downloaded, close Internet Explorer, and any other running software programs.

8. Double-click the file that was saved to the desktop. The virus definitions will be updated.
