How CD-ROMs Are Run Automatically

Autorun, Enable and Disable

Windows polls repeatedly to detect if a CD-ROM has been inserted. When a CD-ROM is detected, the volume is checked for an Autorun.inf file. If the volume contains an Autorun.inf file, programs listed on the "open=" line in the file are run.

If the volume is an audio CD, Windows performs the default action (if any) for the AudioCD file type. "Play" is the default action for the AudioCD file type until you follow the steps above.

NOTE: To activate the autorun feature temporarily (for a single CD-ROM) after you disable Auto Insert Notification, double-click My Computer, right-click the CD-ROM drive, and then click AutoPlay.
