Icons - Rebuilding Your ShellIconCache File in Windows 98 - How To



Sometimes you experience problems with the icons turning black or they change in color, or you can't change the size??

2 Ways Of Fixing This.

1. Reboot the computer in SAFE mode. After you are in safe mode you can reboot again into the regular mode and the icons will be re-created.

2. Delete the "ShellIconCache" file which is located in the c:\windows folder.

The procedure is as follows

1. Open Explorer by clicking Start and from the pop-up selection choosing "Windows Explorer".

The "Windows Explorer" window will open.

2. Scroll down until you see the folder windows and click on the folder

3. After clicking on the windows folder, move the mouse to the right side of the screen and scroll down until you see the file "ShellIconCache".

Click on the file to select it.

4. Press the Delete key on the keyboard.

5. A message will appear "Are you sure you want to send "ShellIconCache" to the recycle Bin?"

6. With the mouse click on the "Yes" button.

7. The file will be deleted.

8. Close "Windows Explorer" by clicking of the X at the top right corner.

9. Restart Windows by Clicking the Start button, selecting Shutdown, and clicking OK

When Windows 98 restarts, all the information in the "ShellIconCache" file will be rebuild. The boot process can take a few extra minutes longer since all the icons have to be rebuild.

Also

1. In Case you are having problems with the ShellIconCache file and deleting it does not help, a quick method for fixing these problems is to boot the computer in the SAFE mode, and after windows has finished loading completely, reboot the computer into the regular mode.

2. It is possible that your icons were changed due to some changes you have made to things like the themes. In such a case right click on the desktop, select Display properties then Effects then select the default icons.
