LAN: Changing Your DNS Settings in Windows

How to Change the Settings if You Use a Cable Modem, ISDN, DSL or non-University Network Connection

If your computer is connected to the Internet as soon as Windows starts and does not dial a phone number for Internet service, follow these instructions to change your DNS settings:

1. Click on the Start button on your screen (usually located in the lower left corner of your Windows screen). A menu will appear. From that menu, choose Settings... and then from the second menu that appears, choose Control Panel.

2. The Control Panel window will appear. In that window, find the icon labled Network and double-click on it (Note: your Network icon may look slightly different than the one shown below).

3. The Network window will then appear. In the window, you will see a list of the network hardware and software components installed on your computer. In the list, look for the items that begin with "TCP/IP". In the example below, there are two items that begin with "TCP/IP": "TCP/IP -> 3Com Fast Etherlink 10/100Mb Bus-Master PC" and "TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter."

4. Find the TCP/IP item that corresponds to your cable modem, ISDN, or DSL connection. Once you have found it, click once on it so that it is highlight (as in the example above) and then click on the Properties button located below the list of items. If you only have one TCP/IP item, simply labeled "TCP/IP," highlight that item and click on the Properties button. 5. A new window called TCP/IP Properties will appear. Near the top of the window will be several file types. Find the tab labled DNS Configuration and click on it as shown below.

6. On the DNS Configuration tab, look at the section that starts with DNS Server Search Order, as shown below.

7. If the larger box below DNS Server Search Order contains any of the following numbers:

128.8.5.2
128.8.74.2, or
128.8.76.2
remove the numbers by clicking on each number and then clicking the Remove button to the right until the numbers are all gone.

8. Now, enter in the DNS number or numbers provided by your Internet service provider in the box containing the 3 dots. After typing in each number, click the Add button to add the number to the larger box below. OR, if instructed to do so by your Internet service provider, select Disable DNS at the top of the DNS Configuration tab by clicking on the circle next to that setting (doing so will cause the rest of the DNS Configuration tab to turn gray--that is normal).

(the DNS number in this image is an EXAMPLE ONLY--it is not real)

9. Note: if your Intenet service provider only gives you one DNS number, put that number into the Primary DNS box and enter a zero ("0") in each of the four sections of the Secondary DNS box.

10. You have now changed your DNS settings. Click the OK button at the bottom of the window to close that window, then click the OK button at the bottom of the next window. If you are asked if you want to restart your computer, click Yes. You are now finished.
