When you run the Disk Cleanup utility, the program may stop responding (hang) while scanning for compressed files.

This occurs when there is an incorrect entry in the registry that is used by the Disk Cleanup utility to locate compressed files..

To fix this problem, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

2. Locate and then click the following registry key:

3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress Old Files

4. On the Edit menu, click Delete.

5. When prompted to "Confirm Key Delete," click Yes.

6. Quit Registry Editor.
